Five thoughts everybody has about starting out in martial arts

“I’m too out of shape to train.”

Kung fu meets you where you are, and builds you up from there. People of all ages, body types, disabilities, and fitness levels train in kung fu. Ving Tsun is not a sport martial art - there are no competitions. It’s just you and your fellow students, working together to get strong, whatever that means for your body.

“I’ve never done martial arts before.”

Don’t worry! No prior experience is required. In fact, we have a saying in kung fu - “empty your cup”. It means the less you think you know, the better. Come to the training ready to learn; if your “cup” is already full, how can you receive more knowledge? Most kung fu beginners have never thrown a punch before. By the end of the first class, you’ll throw hundreds of punches.

“I don’t want to be the only newbie.”

It can be intimidating to step into a martial arts class full of more experienced people. With the 6 Week Beginner Program, you’ll be part of a whole group of folks who are just as brand-new to kung fu as you are. Everyone can start at square one together, with the help of expert instructors.

“When would I ever use martial arts in real life?”

Kung fu is for fighting and self defense, but that’s not all. A person who trains in kung fu gains practical everyday benefits, like … better stamina, both physical and mental. Lifelong improved mobility and cognitive decline prevention. The calm confidence of knowing that you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe in this world.

“Where do I even start?”
